Gastric Balloon in Turkey

The intragastric balloon is a balloon that is inserted into the stomach without surgical intervention to occupy part of the stomach and allow weight loss by saturating and slowing the passage of food. Thus, the diet can be re-evaluated, restricted and re-educated to change eating habits and significantly reduce obesity. So, the gastric balloon is a tool to lose weight by eating less, but it must be integrated into a complete program of nutritional counseling, exercise and psychological support.

What is a gastric balloon?

One of the restrictive gastric surgery techniques that we offer to our patients in Turkey is the so-called gastric balloon. A gastric balloon is an capsule that can be swallowed by you or inserted by a specialist through gastroscopy. This balloon is then filled with a suitable substance. This is usually a mixture – a mixture of gas or air, or even a solution of saline. Since a gastric balloon involves only a minor procedure that takes about 30 minutes, you can leave our office the same day. To avoid risks, your gastric balloon will be removed by your specialist in Turkey after about 3-6 months. This is especially necessary because otherwise the stomach lining can become irritated, which can lead to nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting.

So, the balloon is inserted without surgery, endoscopy or anesthesia. The patient swallows a capsule which ist connected to a small tube (catheter). Once the capsule is melted in the stomach, the balloon is filled with sterile salt water through the catheter. The amount of fluid varies and is determined in consultation with the physician and depends on the individual patient. Placement is done under x-ray guidance. Depending on the procedure, the balloon may also dissolve after about 4 to 6 months and then be excreted.

What is the procedure of a gastric balloon surgery in Turkey?

The gastric balloon is inserted orally through the mouth. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is accompanied only by anesthesia of the larynx. Once the balloon is in the stomach, it is filled with a saline solution through a small tube. A self-sealing valve on the gastric balloon provides automatic closure and the tube is withdrawn. The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes and you can be discharged after a short observation period.

The balloon floats freely in the stomach and provides a faster feeling of fullness and less hunger. The gastric balloon can remain in the stomach for up to six months until it needs to be removed.

Removal is equally uncomplicated and oral. The larynx is again anesthetized and a catheter is inserted to deflate the balloon. The intragastric balloon is then pulled out in its unfilled state, exactly as it was inserted. Some balloons also dissolve on their own and are expelled after 6 months or a year.

What are the advantages of a gastric balloon?

The balloon placed in the stomach signals a faster feeling of fullness in the body (due to the contact of the balloon with the stomach sensors), so this restrictive treatment method can be considered as a kind of support measure for dietary changes. Your stomach sends signals of satiety and you have less appetite. The quick insertion of the balloon allows you to leave the surgery the same day and adjust your life step by step to the new circumstances. In addition, complications of gastric balloon insertion are very rare. Moreover, this procedure does not lead to anatomical changes and the capsule is simply removed after a certain period of time.

What are the risks of gastric balloon surgery abroad?

Theoretically, the gastric balloon can burst, but this chance is extremely small. The saline solution is usually mixed with a dye, so in this case the urine becomes discolored. The doctor then either removes the balloon immediately or the then empty balloon is naturally excreted through the intestines.

Shortly after the insertion of the intragastric balloon, there may be a slight scratching in the throat, which is completely normal and will quickly disappear. In addition, nausea or mild pressure pain may occur in rare cases. These complaints can be treated with medication and usually disappear after a short acclimatization period.

The intragastric balloon is not suitable for rapid weight loss, as the risk of the so-called yo-yo effect is very high after removal and weight gain can reappear immediately.
