What is a gastric band in Turkey / Antalya?
One of the prominent bariatric methods in Antalya, Turkey, is the gastric band. In our facility, this is placed by experienced specialist physicians using a minimally invasive technique. During general anesthesia, the band is inserted through laparoscopy and the so-called “keyhole method.” This method is characterized by the need for only a few incisions in the abdominal wall to position the band around the upper part of the stomach.
The procedure divides the stomach into two sections, creating a smaller upper pouch. The reduced volume of the front part of the stomach – roughly the size of a tennis ball – limits food intake. Excessive eating creates uncomfortable pressure in the upper abdomen, which can lead to nausea and possibly vomiting. This encourages patients to be mindful of the amount of food they consume since their natural hunger sensation remains.
As with other restrictive gastric surgeries, patients looking to undergo such a procedure in Antalya, Turkey, must meet certain criteria:
Gastric band surgery involves placing a hollow silicone band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch about the size of a ping pong ball. When food stretches the pouch, a feeling of fullness is quickly achieved, reducing hunger and aiding in weight loss. The band is connected to a tube with a port system that sits beneath the skin. Through this system, fluid can be injected into the band using a special needle to adjust the band’s diameter and, consequently, the degree of stomach restriction. The more fluid added, the tighter the band becomes.
Gastric band surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes. It is a minimally invasive procedure, also known as the keyhole or laparoscopic technique. In this procedure, a total of five small incisions are made through which the camera and surgical instruments are introduced. A slightly larger incision is required for placing the gastric band beneath the skin at the lower end of the sternum.
The hospital stay after the operation usually lasts three to five days.
Approximately one month after the procedure, the band is adjusted for the first time. A few millimeters of fluid are injected into the band using a special needle. Often, a contrast medium visible under the X-ray machine is used during this process to detect any leaks or leaks early. Such adjustments are typically painless and help to find the optimal tightness of the gastric band for the patient.

In general, a successful gastric band therapy should be used when the patient loses about ½ kg per week. More specifically, when this form of treatment achieves a reduction of approximately 50% of excess weight.
The gastric band is particularly suitable for people with a BMI over 40. For additional health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea, gastric band surgery should be considered starting at a BMI of 35. However, this procedure should only be considered if non-operative measures such as exercise or nutritional counseling have not been successful over a period of six to twelve months.
After the operation, prescribed medications can generally continue to be taken. However, it is advisable to crush very large tablets to minimize the risk of them getting stuck and causing nausea. Aspirin and some pain relievers should be avoided as they can cause stomach irritation.
Although the gastric band can theoretically be removed, this is generally not desired. Removal could lead to weight regain.
In principle, you can take the prescribed medications as usual. Only very large tablets should be crushed to avoid issues like nausea if they get stuck. It’s advisable to avoid aspirin and painkillers in general as they can cause stomach irritation.
Theoretically, this is possible. However, it is generally not desired, as the removal of the gastric band typically leads to weight regain.
With the gastric band, you gradually and steadily lose weight as long as you maintain the new lifestyle consistently. Since rapid weight loss poses a health risk, this gentle method is much more effective. Within the first 12 to 18 months, you can lose up to 1 kilogram per month.
Since weight loss can regulate the menstrual cycle, it’s possible that you may have an easier time getting pregnant. The band can be loosened during pregnancy, allowing you to consume more food. It will then be tightened again
The choice between gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric bypass depends on many individual factors, including the patient’s health, comorbidities, personal preferences, and the surgeon’s experience. Each of these bariatric surgeries has its own advantages and disadvantages:
The choice of the best procedure should be made on an individual basis, taking into account the risks and benefits of each procedure as well as the individual’s health goals and preferences. A comprehensive discussion with a bariatric surgeon is essential to make the optimal decision. Our staff at GetSlim will be happy to advise you.
