Have a gastric band in Turkey

A gastric band is also known as a gastric stenosis. Through keyhole surgery, the surgeon places a silicone band around your stomach, just below the esophagus. The ring divides your stomach into two parts: a small forestomach and a larger resting stomach. Because the forestomach is smaller, you feel full faster. So you need to eat less, which causes you to lose weight. The stomach band also gives you a longer feeling of fullness, so you eat less.

What is a gastric band?

One of the limiting treatment methods in the form of gastric surgery at our location in Turkey is the gastric band. It is placed around the stomach by one of our specialists using a minimally invasive technique. Under general anesthesia and by means of laparoscopy, the gastric band is inserted using the so-called “keyhole method”. The keyhole method has the advantage that only a few incisions are required in the abdominal wall to then place the band around the upper part of the stomach.

  • You can lose many extra pounds with this surgery.
  • The surgeon inserts the gastric band using keyhole surgery.
  • The scars are small, so your recovery will be quick.
  • The surgeon does not have to cut open your stomach.

What are the effects of gastric banding?

Gastric banding divides the stomach into two parts, creating a forestomach. The small volume of the front part of the stomach that is formed (the size of a tennis ball) means that less food can be absorbed. If too much food is eaten, there is uncomfortable pressure in the upper abdomen and throat, which can quickly lead to nausea and vomiting. This leads to a certain learning process for patients, especially since the feeling of hunger remains completely natural!

When you wear a gastric band, it has a big impact on your life. You get full much faster, which means you eat less. It is important that you adjust your lifestyle accordingly. Our Get Slim Turkey lifestyle change program will help you do that. When you lose weight, you will have fewer health problems. Your symptoms may even disappear. Your quality of life will also improve. All of this can be the result of gastric banding.

As with other restrictive gastric surgeries, the following requirements apply to surgical procedures in Turkey:

  • BMI (body mass index) of 40 (corresponds to the clinical picture of obesity).
  • BMI of 35 and severe physical impairment
  • No mental illnesses
  • exclusion from alcohol and drug abuse

What is the procedure of gastric band surgery abroad?

The gastric band is made of silicone and is hollow inside. It is wrapped around the upper part of the stomach to form a so-called forestomach, which is only about the size of a ping-pong ball. When the forestomach is stretched by eating, it creates a feeling of satiety. The feeling of hunger is suppressed, helping to lose weight. The gastric band is also connected by a small tube to a gate system that is implanted under the skin. A special needle can be used to fill the gastric band with fluid to regulate the degree of stomach constriction. The more fluid that is injected, the more the stomach will be narrowed.

Gastric band surgery is performed under anesthesia and takes about 30 to 60 minutes. The hospital stay usually lasts three to five days. The surgery is performed as a keyhole surgery, which means that a total of five skin incisions totaling about two centimeters are made and the camera and instruments are inserted through these skin incisions. The gastric band, which is placed under the skin at the lower end of the sternum, also requires a slightly larger skin incision.

After about a month the gate system is used for the first time to inject a few millimeters of fluid. For this purpose, an X-ray contrast agent is usually used, which is visible on the X-ray to quickly detect leaks. These injections are usually painless.

Frequently asked questions about Gastric Band in Turkey

Theoretically this is possible. However, this is usually not desirable, because the removal of the gastric band usually leads to a renewed weight gain.

With the gastric band, you will lose weight slowly but surely if you follow the new lifestyle permanently and constantly. Since rapid weight loss is a health risk, this gentle method is much more effective. Within the first 12 to 18 months, you can lose up to 1 kilo per month.

In principle, you can take the prescribed medication as usual. Only very large tablets should be crushed so that they do not cause problems such as nausea if they get stuck. It is advisable to avoid aspirin and painkillers in general, as they can cause stomach irritation.

Since weight loss regulates the menstrual cycle, it is possible that you may become pregnant more easily. The band can be taken off during pregnancy so that you can eat more food again. It will then be put back on.
